Generally speaking, non-essential travel outside of Australia is forbidden for Australian citizens and permanent residents.
Other French nationals with temporary visas [work/ student/ tourist/ WFV] can leave the country at any point in time (insofar as flights are still available). However, the right to return to Australia is not automatically guaranteed, even in cases of reuniting with family! You will therefore have to think carefully before going on vacation abroad or sending your child to visit their grandparents in France…
