On Saturday 26 August, the Mayor of the City of Greater Bendigo, Cr. Margaret O’Rourke, organised a reception in honour of its local veterans, Mr Ronald Berry and Mr Harvey Bawden, who were recently awarded the French Legion of Honour.
Mr Harvey Bawden was only 18 years old when he enlisted to the Royal Air Force in 1942, and served in Germany. In March 1945, his battalion was captured and he was the only survivor of the attack.
Mr Ronald Berry landed in Normandy in June 1944, as part of the D-Day landing.
Both Mr Ronald Berry and Mr Harvey Bawden have published books on their incredible life journey.
Mrs Daniele Kemp, Consular Councillor, represented France during the reception. This event was an illustration of the enduring French Australian friendship.
