Having enjoyed phenomenal success in France with his novel What Became of the White Savage, Mr Garde will discuss his work and its broader significance. The novel recounts the story of a young French sailor abandoned on the coast of Australia in the 1840s, who is later found after 17 years living among aborigines. A work which questions assumptions of what it means to be civilised, his work grapples with issues of identity, belonging, and differing cultural values.
