On Monday the 4th of August a service to commemorate the start of the First World War was held at the Shrine of Rememberance.
The President of the Victorian RSL, Major General David MacLaughlan, welcomed the guests to the ceremony. The Hon. Denis Naphtine, Premier of Victoria, delivered a moving speech before laying a wreath on behalf opf the people of Victoria. Members of the public gathered before the eternal flame in memory of those who served at the Front.
This commemorative service also marked the beginning of the exhibition Australia will be there: Victorians in the First World War (1914-1919) at the Gallery east of the Visitor’s Centre. This fascinating exhibition draws attention to the role played by Victorians during the war.
