On Saturday July 19th 1916, the Fifth Division of the Australian Army launched a diversion attack in the valley of the Somme which we know now as the Battle of Fromelles. On the same date this year, we came together in the gardens of the Shrine to commemorate this event and those Australians who died. Standing around the statute known affectionately as ‘Cobbers’, Mr Ted Baillieu, the  guest speaker of the Friends of the 15th Brigade, gave an impassioned description of the battle that played out in ‘no-man’s-land‘. Later, wreaths were laid in commemoration of those soldiers who died in this quintessential battle of attrition. It was pleasing to see many faces young and old in the crowd, with the students of Melbourne Grammar School represented in force.
