Which cards are involved?
- Adult secure rectangular identity cards issued from 1 January 2014
- Adult old secure rectangular identity cards issued between January 2, 2004 and December 31, 2013

If your National Identy Card meets the above conditions, the 5-year extension is automatic. No procedure is necessary, even if thevalidity date displayed on the card is apparently obsolete.
Before making an appointment to renew your national identity card, please make sure that your card has really expired or is about to expire, and not still in that 5 year extension period. To be sure, you can use this tool which will tell you the new validity dates of your National Identiy Card.
Please note that that the new National Identidy Cards, called Electronic National Identidy Cards, will be valid for 10 years. They look like this:
