The new French natioanl ID card française will be widely available from the 2nd of August 2021.

What has changed?

The new identity card is in the form of a bank card (like the new driver’s licence). It has a highly secure electronic chip, which contains a photo of the holder and their fingerprints. It is also equipped with an QR code which allows the cards to be read automatically

Why?

This new format will help to prevent identity fraud.

In Melbourne?

ID cards cannot be processed in Melbourne until the beginning of 2022.
